Bowen Secondary, Thursday, 9 May 2019 – As part of the support for the 11th ASEAN Schools Games (ASG), the National Youth Sports Institute (NYSI) Sport Science staff organised a workshop for the ASG youth coaches.

Three concurrent workshops were held on Sport Psychology, Sport Physiotherapy and Sport Nutrition. The workshops involved coaches in small-group discussions and interactive role-play.

“One of my main takeaways from the Sport Physiotherapy session is how to better manage injuries. Instead of conventional methods like ‘P.R.I.C.E.’ that we previously trained for, we now know more about the ‘P.O.L.I.C.E.’ method as well. It is also important to impart proper rehabilitation techniques to the athletes to help them get back to their performance as soon as possible,” said tennis coach Warrick Tan.

With reference to the Sport Nutrition session, swimming coach Lui Jian Long said, “It is important for athletes to hydrate before, during and after their training or their race. They also need to know the types of important macro-nutrients to consume before and after their trainings.”

After the Sport Psychology session, basketball coach Lim Bing Hui said, ”The session was a good reminder for us to think about our coaching philosophy. This shapes how the training will be executed and even how the athletes will look upon the coaches.” He also added that the discussion was a good opportunity for coaches to align their coaching philosophies.

The ASG is scheduled to be held in Semarang, Indonesia from 17 to 25 July 2019.
