There are different types of secondary schools in Singapore. They can be categorised under the following:

Government

Schools organised and conducted directly by the government.

Autonomous

Autonomous Schools were established in 1994 to provide pupils with quality education within the framework of a non-independent status but with greater autonomy devolved to the schools (MOE).

These schools provide a wider range of innovative courses and enrichment programmes that enhance your child’s learning experience and develop his/her talents.

Independent

These schools enjoy greater autonomy in curricular innovations, implementation of school programmes, administration, student admissions and the setting of fee structures

Private

Schools not governed by MOE; for-profit schools.

Different schools offer different programs. This can be shown in the infographic above.  Below are the types of programs student-athletes can consider:

1.     O’/N’ Levels

government, autonomous, or independent

a.      Secondary Education places students in the Express, Normal (Academic) or Normal (Technical) course according to how they perform at the PSLE.

b.      Competition: Students involved in a CCA can compete in the National School Games’  C and B Division.

4. Athlete-Friendly Academic Programme

Singapore Sports School offers a quality athlete-friendly academic programme at the secondary level that leads to the GCE O-Level and GCE N-Level examinations. Our secondary programme is founded upon principles of exemplary teaching and learning to nurture future-ready student-athletes. They are provided a holistic education where they are engaged in meaningful learning experiences in and out of the classroom to prepare them for life after Sports School.

To effectively balance sports and studies, student-athletes are provided athlete-friendly academic support. Class sizes are kept small for teachers to give student-athletes optimal attention and give them a good understanding on student-athletes’ progress. Student-athletes also enjoy flexible academic structure and academic make-up lessons to help them cope with their studies while pursuing sport excellence. There is also a strong mentorship programme, with an academy mentor and other staff who follow their growth and progress and provide guidance, throughout their years at Sports School.

For student-athletes interested in long-term athlete development, there are through-train post-secondary academic pathways available. They will be able to bypass the GCE O-Level and GCE N-Level national examinations to progress to the International Baccalaureate Diploma ProgrammeDiploma in Business (DBIZ) or Diploma in Business Studies (DBS).
